aerialphoto > Aug 27: The Rodman Dam - south-west of Palatka Florida, dams up the Ocklawaha River forming Lake Ocklawaha. The dam and lake were originally designed as part of a cross-Florida canal for barge traffic from the Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico. The canal was planned to run from the St John's river through the state to just north of Crystal River, a little over 100 miles total. The project was periodically toyed with throughout the 20th century and construction finally began in the 60s. It was abandoned, unfinished, in 1991 but the lake, dam, and the lock for access to the lake are in use today.
